ある英語授業のシナリオ(1)

Hi. Good afternoon. My name is Naoto Taguchi. Let’s start the lesson!

Today’s topic is ice cream. It was very hot yesterday. You may want to eat ice cream, right? Do you know who made ice cream for the first time? You do not know.

Now look at the text. The first line says, “Who invented ice cream?” Invent means to make it for the first time, or to create it, to originate it.
And “Nobody knows.” Nobody means there is no person. So the sentence means we have no one; no person; that knows the creator of ice cream.

We have to put this underlined part into Japanese. Can you make it? Would you try, Mr. …? Well, good.

Then shall we go to another sentence. The history of ice cream is a mystery. A mystery is the question we do not know the answer. So we do not know how and when ice cream was made. Who made it.

No one knows exactly how and when people began to eat it. Exactly is in detail.
For instance, now it is around 2:30. Look at the clock. Well, it says, it is exactly 2:33. Exact means telling slight, small, and correct.

It is a very old dessert. Yes. Ice cream is an old sweet. It tastes sweet like candies, cookies, cream puff, and so on.

The Greeks, Greeks are people in Greek. Greek is a European nation. ギリシャ。
So the Greeks areギリシャ人。The Greeks ate ice cream (or something that was like it) in Greece many, many years ago.

The Greeks ate, had, enjoyed, ice cream. Then, “Or something that was like it”?
like here means similar, look like, resemble. Something that was like it is something like ice cream. Maybe ice candy. Maybe crashed ice. Maybe just having ice in your mouth.

The Romans also ate ice cream in Rome long ago. Also, means too. The Romans, just like The Greeks, ate ice cream, too.
