英英辞典への招待⑩
もう一冊、おすすめの辞典がこれ。
The General Basic English Dictionary.
日本では「ベーシック英語辞典」というようなタイトルで出版されていたはずです。
こちらも現在、入手可能かどうかよくわかりません。
みなさんは、ベーシックイングリッシュをご存知でしょうか。
オグデン・リチャーズというひとが作り出した850語で、あらゆることを説明する、という人工言語です。
do という単語を学べば、関連語句である、do, did, done, doing も全て知っている、というカウントですから、実際の英語の量は850語にはとどまりませんけれど。
わたしたちは、よく、「この単語を知らないから、言いたいことが言えない」という言い訳をします。
でも、実際には、850語＋正確な文法力で、十分コミュニケs－ションを取ることができます。
おそらく、手元の英英辞典で、最も活用したのが、これ。
flyを引いてみます。
fly = go through air with wings or in airplane etc.
英語そのものはいたってシンプルですが、表現能力は、圧倒的にのびます。
21.(Uniform) = the same type of clothes many people who belong to a group wear; You are wearing your school (??).
22. (Vacation) = a long holiday. When your school is closed, you have this.
23. (Wallet) = Men carry theirs in their pockets. They keep paper money in them.
24. (waX) = a solid material made of fats oils, which changes to a thick liquid when melted by heat.
25. (Youth) = a young man. older boys and girls. They in Japan are lucky. They do not have to go to war.
26. (Zoo) = a place where animals are kept so you can go and see them. Father took me to the place yesterday. I enjoyed looking at big elephants and other animals.
