英英辞典への招待⑤

英英辞典の良いところは、「訳語」ではなく、「意味」が解ることです。

「訳語」は、状況によって変化します。

ある言葉の使われる状況は、その文章の流れによって変化します。

この状況、ということばも、英語で言えば、condition とか situation が考えられます。

situation を手元の英英辞典で引くと、a position or condition at the moment : a job という意味が出てきます。

at the moment という言葉がついています。特に「現状において；今この瞬間に」というニュアンスが含まれていることが分かります。

condition を引いてみます。

a state of being; existence という意味が出てきます。

時間を表す表現はないので、ある程度の期間、ずっと不変の「状況」なのだ、とわかります。

たとえば、推移する「台風」の状況、であれば、刻々と変化します。situation がふさわしいでしょう。

それにたいして、「労働条件」などは、不変なものですから、condition がよい、ということです。

things というのもあります。　Things are getting better. 「状況は良くなってきた」
