This new surgery could change pregnancy forever

It’s not widely known, but each year, hundreds of women in the US are born without the ability to carry a child–because they don’t have uteruses.
「広く知られてはいないが、毎年、数百人のアメリカ女性が、子供を妊娠する能力を持たずに生まれてくる―子宮を持っていないのだ。」
これは、衝撃的なニュースです。
uterus は子宮のことで、複数形はuteruses や、uteri など。
ところが、この記事によると、そうした女性でも、手術によって子供を持てる可能性がある、と言います。
In late September, four American women received womb transplants from living donors at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. TIME reported exclusively.
「9月後半、ダラスのベイロー大学医学部で、生きたドナーから子宮の手桔梗を受けた女性が4人いる」とのこと。末尾にタイムが独占して報道している、とスクープであることを強調しています。
さらに続けて、スエーデンでは、子宮の移植には成功の前例がある、と書いています。
そして、
Among the four women treated at Baylor, three of the transplanted wombs were removed after tests determined the organs were not receiving normal blood flow. （中略）
「手術を受けた4人の女性のうち、3名は移植した子宮が通常の血流を受け付けず、結局、切除することになった」と報じた後、
The fourth, however, has shown no signs of trouble so far, and if that continues, the recipient could begin trying to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization within a year.

と書いています。
さらに費用も決して安いものではありません。
Uterus transplants aren’t cheap.
They’re estimated to cost between $150,000 and more than $500,000, and since they are experimental, they are not usually covered by insurance; in the cases so far in the US, the hospitals have footed the bill, since their doctors are essentially performing research on these willing recipients.
「手術は、だいたい15万ドルから50万ドルかかるが、それは実験的なものなので、保険がきかない。アメリカの現在までの事例では、病院が費用を負担している。医師たちは、子宮を移植しようという希望者に対しての研究を行っているからだ。」
おおざっぱに言って1500万円～5000万円となると、おいそれと払える金額ではありません。
しかし、少なくとも、子宮を持たないで生まれた方にとっては朗報だろうと思います。
