There is one story that the Roman emperor, Nero often ( 1 ) slaves to the mountains to get snow for his desserts.

There is one story. We know a story. Many people talked about this story.
The emperor is a person who is in the top position in a country. This position is so high that ordinary person cannot take the place easily. In Japan, the emperor is very sacred, like a god, and only son or brother, or rarely sister, wife, and daughter can take the position of the relative.

In Japan, next year, Heisei Emperor will retire and his son, the Prince will take over the emperor’s position. We call this position “Throne”

Nero, top person in Rome, did something having to do with slaves, to the mountains to get snow for his desserts.

slaves? They are low ranked people, they had to follow the orders of their master. They were sold and bought by the upper class people. In the United States, they have a history of black slaves until their civil war.

Ok, just imagine. We live in city area. We don’t have ice. You are the king or the top person in the city. You want something cold. You know that there is a lot of ice in the mountains. How would you do? You order somebody and make him go to the mountain to bring ice from the cold mountains.

That’s right. This is what Nero did. He ordered slaves to go to the mountain to get snow for his desserts. Order someone to go? We often use the verb “send,” just like sending a letter, sending a parcel. That is what Nero did. In fact, he send…send-sent-sent. So, the answer to ( 1 ) is “sent.” Thank you.

Marco Polo tasted flavored ice, too during his famous travels in the Far East.
Marco Polo is an Italian adventurer. He may have come to Japan, too. He said “Japan is a country of gold.” Marco Polo tasted, ate, enjoyed, had, flavored ice.
Flavored, here, means tasty. Have some tastes with it. When? During, means at that time. the Far East means the Eastern end of the world. China, Korea, and Japan belong to the Far East. He enjoyed tasty ice and brought back Italy, how to make it. That is how the ice cream spread the whole world.
