日本大学チアリーディング問題①
いまや、いささか旧聞に属してしまいましたが、日大の新たな問題がチアリーディング部の、パワハラ問題。
これは、The Mainichi という、歴史のある英字新聞の、インターネット版に載っていた記事です。
掲載されたのも、８月９日と、1週間前になってしまいましたが、事件の要点が分かりやすくまとめてあります。
このコラムでは、実際の記事の、重要な部分をピックアップして、訳してみました。
まず、ヘッドラインは次の通りです。

「日本大学チアリーディング部コーチが女性部員にハラスメント；学校人権事務局」
Nihon University’s human rights body has confirmed that the head coach of the school’s competitive cheerleading club harassed a female member, the Maichini Shinbun has learned.
「日本大学の人権事務局が同大の強豪チアリーディング部のコーチによる、女性部員に対してハラスメントを確認した、という情報を毎日新聞は得た」
The student was driven into mental distress and was diagnosed as suffering from an adjustment disorder and was unable to attend the university.
was driven into = ～という状態に追い込まれた
distress = 精神的苦痛
diagnosed = 診断された
adjustment disorder = 適応障害
unable to = ～することができない
「その学生は、精神的苦痛を与えられて、適応障害と診断され、通学できなくなった」
She sought the arbitration of the university’s Health and Physical Education Council, which oversees many of the school’s athletic clubs including the cheerleading club, but was turned down, according to people familiar with the case.

turn down = ことわる
