いよいよ近づいてきた英検。
英検を受験しようという方にとって、大きな難問は、長文です。
今回は、大学入試問題を参考にして、長文読解の方法について、述べていきたいと思います。
いつも年度初めに、生徒さんに申しあげる、英文読解のコツ。それはー
ＳＶを見抜くこと、です。
英検でも1級レベルになると、主語＋動詞の組み合わせを見つけ出すのもなかなか大変です。
というわけで、ちょっとやさしめの大学入試問題の文章から、ＳＶの組み合わせを探し出す練習をしてみましょう。
いつも、全体の流れが大切、ということはどなたも理解していただけるのですが、では具体的にどのように流れを見つけ出すのか、これが案外難しい。
まずは、実際に見てみましょう。
最初は、英作文の模範と言ってもよいような、読みやすい英文から。
どうして英作文の規範になる、ということの説明は、後程します。
まずは、第一段落を見てみましょう。
Many people worry about the environment for a number of reasons. First, people are making the air, water and land dirty. Everyone knows it is not good for the future. Second, manufacturing companies aren’t careful and can harm the environment. Third, people throw too much away. There are other reasons, but most importantly, people don’t understand how we can save the environment. We believe that education will help people understand better. One way people can help is to remember the saying; Reduce,Reuse, and Recycle.
第1文 Many people worry about the environment for a number of reasons.
S = Many people V= worry 多くの人が心配している。なにを？ 環境を。なぜ？理由はいっぱい。
第2文 First, people are making the air, water and land dirty.
S= people V= are making ここで大切なのは、make という動詞。make は、「作る」のほかに、
使役動詞として、make （人）（動詞の原形）の組み合わせで、誰かに～させる、という意味があります。
そこで、「人々は、空気、水、土地を汚している」
第3文 Everyone knows it is not good for the future.
S=Everyone V=knows 誰もが知っている なにを？これは良くない。 これって？その上の文。
第4文 Second, manufacturing companies aren’t careful and can harm the environment.
S= manufacturing companies 製造会社 V= aren’t careful and can harm 傷つける
なにを？環境を。
第5文 Third, people throw too much away.
S=people V= throw ゴミ捨てすぎ。
第6文 There are other reasons but most importantly, people don’t understand how we can save the environment.
S= other reasons V=are / S= people V=don’t understand
他にも理由はある。でも人は環境の保全の仕方を知らない。
第7文 We believe that education will help people understand better.
S=We V= believe (that) S= education V=will help 教育は人が理解するのをたすける
第8文 One way people can help is to remember the saying; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Ｓ＝One way people can help V=is 人が（環境を）助ける一つの方法 is (=)
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle ですよ。
この短いパラグラフひとつに、8つもの文が入り、しかも、それぞれの文がすべて、次の文にピタリつながり、間断がありません。
こういう文章が、英語としてわかりやすい文章です。
全体を見てみましょう。
①多くの人が環境を心配
②人は環境を汚す。
③工場は環境を壊す。
④人はごみを捨てる。
⑤人は環境を守る方法を知らない。
⑥教育は人にこのことを知らせる。
⑦教育が人に理解させる。
⑧人が環境を救う方法は、３つのＲだ。
こう並べてみると、言いたいテーマはすごくはっきりしていますよね。
こうしたアプローチの仕方をもう少し詳しく見ていきたいと思います。
