I assert that the mandatory retirement age system should not be abolished for the following reason: deterioration in skills and in knowledge. Let me explain with two examples.
First, I will give you an example of doctors. Today, we are suffering the pandemic of corona virus. The existence of new type of virus or modification type threatens the people all over the world. About such new disease, old doctors are not well informed and sometimes many cannot treat patients properly. Also, there is possibility that even these experienced physicians make mistakes in diagnoses or give wrong or out-of-date information, confusing common people. For instance, one of the well-known medical commentators made misleading explanation on TV program, and as a result, many people wondered whether double masks were useful than ordinary ones at all times. Of course, double masks are good when you walk slowly, but we should not wear them when we exercise. When I learned this case, I recalled my grandfather. He had been clever and graduated from one of the top class universities in Japan. Our family members respected him and asked any question of him when we were puzzled. However, I knew that he, recently, has confessed that his acquired information became a blur in his memory and he could hardly follow the logic. We have to accept the cruel fact of life; everybody declines. I am afraid this may occur to people as well. Even well-experienced professionals cannot remember what they learned. Or they may make mistakes. Nobody knows if that mistake can be fatal.
Second, nowadays, TV news shows often report corporal punishment cases at college, high school, and in elementary school. Experienced teachers often spank children or tease students as they did in many years ago. Hearing these pieces of news, I wonder how these teachers felt when they did such things. They are out-of-date in their attitudes. They should have left schools many years ago.
These two examples clearly show sad truth; aged professionals should stop working. It is hard for each of us to judge when to stop. We need rules. That is why I say that mandatory retirement age should not be abolished.
