以前、試験に関する英文を書きました。
タイトルは、
Are exams a necessary evil?
でした。
最初、necessary であることを説明するのか、evil であることを書かなくてはならないのか迷いました。
結局のところ、necessary かつ evil であることを述べなくてはならないのだ、ということに気付き、次のような書き方になりました。
試験は必要である。なぜなら、時間、費用、労力に関して最も効率よく学力を図ることかできるから。
Exams are necessary, because they can evaluate students’ ability most effectively in time, cost and labor.
Students have to prepare for an exam, sit for it for an hour or so, and solve the given problems. Teachers check the result and see how far each student studies the chosen part for the test.
What we need is just a few pieces of paper and some hours for checking the result.
(学生は試験のために準備をし、１時間前後の時間を解答にあてる。教師は採点することでそれぞれの学生が決められた範囲をどの程度学んだか理解する。必要なのは数枚の紙と、結果をチェックするための数時間に過ぎない）
試験は悪である。なぜなら、学生に緊張を強いる。テストされることが好きな学生はいない。大切な部分はチェックされるが、周辺知識は放置される。
Exams are evil, for students should be nervous before and during the exam. No students like being tested. Whether students cover important parts is always examined, but less important but interesting or attractive parts is often neglected.
思いついたことを、できるだけわかりやすくキャッチフレーズ（トピック、ポイント）でまとめて、そのあと、説明するように心がけると、ある程度まとまった英作文ができあがります。
このためには、英文に接する機会を増やしていくこと、そして、できれば音読するように努めることが大切です。
